Kitchen Cabinet Width Guide: Choosing Narrow Cabinets That Fit

Kitchen Cabinet Width Guide: Choosing Narrow Cabinets That Fit

A kitchen cabinet width tells you how much horizontal space the cabinet occupies. It does not tell you whether the cabinet will work in the space left on your plan. First reserve the room needed for appliances, panels, fillers and operating clearance. Then choose the correct cabinet type and width.

This guide compares 10-, 12-, 17-, 19- and 22-inch planning positions, with current Nerro product examples. These are individual options to check, not a universal size system or a promise that every width is offered in every collection.

Cabinet width is not the same as the available gap

Read each product in three dimensions: width, height and depth. A 12-inch-wide upper cabinet is different from a tall cabinet described as 12 inches deep. Compare the cabinet-box dimensions with the overall dimensions including the door or drawer front; the front can project beyond the box.

Measure the usable run at the locations relevant to the installation. Walls can be uneven, and a dimension taken in one place may not describe the whole opening. Have the final measurements and installation allowances checked before ordering.

Next identify what occupies that run. Keep the appliance opening, exposed side panels and fillers separate from the cabinet widths. Door swings and drawer travel also need review: a cabinet can fit into the available width while its handle still hits an adjacent wall.

Compare narrow cabinet widths by cabinet type

Width Where to start Key distinction
10 in 10-inch tall cabinet, listed as 84 high and 12 deep A shallow tall-storage option, not a base cabinet or a filler
12 in 12-inch upper cabinet, 24 inches high Width and height are separate from box depth and door projection
17 in Check the required upper, base or pantry category Verify a matching product and its options; the number alone is not an order specification
19 in 19-inch lower cabinet, 34-1/2 inches high A base-storage position with its own depth and finishing requirements
22 in 22-inch two-drawer cabinet Specify both width and drawer count

The examples above are from the Painted range. If you are ordering Euro, start with the Euro cabinet range and verify that collection's exact products. Do not transfer a Painted cabinet's dimensions or available options to a Euro cabinet by assumption.

Calculate the cabinet allowance before selecting a size

Use this planning sequence: measured run minus reserved openings, panels and fillers equals the width allowance for cabinet boxes. The allowance must still be checked against operating clearances and installation conditions.

Illustrative example: a 60-inch run minus a 30-inch appliance opening, a 1-inch panel allowance and 3 inches reserved for fillers leaves 26 inches for cabinet boxes. These numbers demonstrate the arithmetic only. They are not recommended panel thicknesses, filler sizes or appliance clearances, and they do not establish that a suitable 26-inch cabinet is available.

A common mistake is to select cabinets totalling the entire wall measurement and add the finishing pieces afterwards. Another is to shrink an appliance opening to make a preferred cabinet fit. Instead, verify the appliance manufacturer's requirements and the installer's allowances first. If the available products do not fit the remaining budget, revise the layout before ordering.

Where 10- and 12-inch cabinets can fit

A narrow cabinet is useful when the position has a clear storage function. Decide what belongs there before choosing it simply to occupy a gap. Also check whether a narrow internal opening will accommodate those items comfortably.

A 10-inch shallow tall cabinet

The linked Nerro tall cabinet is listed as 10 inches wide, 84 inches high and 12 inches deep. Its tall-storage function makes it different from a short upper or standard-depth base cabinet. The product page notes that it is supplied in two sections. Confirm the exact box and overall depths with the product specifications before finalising an adjacent panel or countertop relationship.

Consider this type of cabinet when the layout calls for shallow tall storage. Check the items you intend to store against the usable interior dimensions; the outside width is not the shelf width. Include receiving access and installation space in the plan.

A 12-inch upper cabinet

The linked 12-inch-wide, 24-inch-high upper example lists an 11-3/4-inch box depth and a 12-5/8-inch depth including the door. This shows why the three dimensions must be read separately. Before ordering, verify the door opening direction and its relationship with an adjacent wall, window trim or perpendicular cabinet.

Check 17- and 19-inch positions separately

A two-inch difference can change the whole run. If your plan calls for a 17-inch cabinet, first identify whether it is an upper, base, drawer or tall position. Locate the matching product in that category and verify its height, depth and configuration. A similarly sized product from another category is not a substitute.

The linked 19-inch lower cabinet is listed at 34-1/2 inches high, with a 23-1/2-inch box depth and a 24-3/8-inch depth including the door. Its toe kick is sold separately. These details belong on the order list alongside the width.

For a cabinet beside a wall, check the complete door swing and handle projection. At an exposed end, account for the selected side panel. At an inside corner, review the neighbouring door or drawer movement. Do not assume the nominal two-inch difference between products supplies the clearance your installation needs.

A 22-inch drawer cabinet needs a storage plan too

The linked 22-inch two-drawer example is listed at 34-1/2 inches high, with a 23-1/2-inch cabinet depth and 20-inch drawer depth. Drawer depth does not establish the usable internal width or height. Check those separately if you plan to store a specific pan, organiser or appliance.

Width and drawer count answer different questions. Width determines the cabinet's place in the run; drawer count divides its storage into levels. Read the 2 vs 3 vs 4 drawer cabinet comparison to choose the storage pattern, then return to the exact product for its dimensions.

If you are still deciding between a shelf cabinet and a drawer bank, start with base cabinets vs drawer cabinets. A deeper item does not automatically fit better in a drawer: its height, handle and required opening space all matter.

Keep fillers and finishing pieces on the order list

A filler provides finishing or clearance space; a cabinet provides storage and has its own operating requirements. Replacing one with the other changes the plan. Check the cabinet components checklist for panels, fillers and toe kicks before completing the cart.

  1. Record the usable run and reserved appliance openings.
  2. List each cabinet's category, width, height, depth and configuration.
  3. Include panels, fillers and toe kicks as separate items.
  4. Review door swings, handles and full drawer travel.
  5. Match the product options and quantities to the final cabinet list.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a 12-inch cabinet into a 12-inch gap?

Do not assume so from the width alone. Check the exact opening, wall conditions, required fillers or panels, handle projection and installation allowances. The door or drawer must work as well as the box fitting.

Is cabinet width the usable interior width?

No. The sides and hardware occupy space. For an organiser or a specific item, use the usable interior measurements rather than the cabinet's outside width.

Can a narrow cabinet replace a filler?

Only if the layout is deliberately revised and the selected cabinet fits and operates correctly. A filler and a cabinet are different components.

Is every 12-inch cabinet 12 inches deep?

No. The number may refer to width or depth, depending on the title. Read width, height and depth separately and distinguish box depth from overall depth including the front.

What if the widths I need are not available?

Recheck the layout and the available products before ordering. Do not force a different cabinet type into the position or reduce required appliance clearances to make the arithmetic work.

Find the cabinet for your plan: browse Painted upper cabinets or Painted drawer cabinets, then confirm the dimensions on the exact product.

Before using the remaining wall width for another cabinet, review cabinet fillers vs end panels. The guide explains their different roles so you can reserve finishing and clearance space before finalising cabinet widths.
