How to Plan Kitchen Cabinets Around a Fridge, Range and Microwave

Kitchen Planning & Storage | Updated September 18, 2026 | 11 min read | Reviewed by Nerro Cabinet Support

Kitchen cabinets around a refrigerator, range or microwave must be planned from the exact appliance specifications. A nominal appliance width does not confirm the finished opening, door movement, ventilation, electrical location or the cabinet dimensions above and beside it.

This guide explains how to organize appliance information before selecting current Nerro fridge, stove and microwave cabinet products. It does not replace appliance-manufacturer instructions, local code requirements, electrical or ventilation design, or review by the qualified trades responsible for installation.

Quick answer

Choose the exact refrigerator, range, hood and microwave models before finalizing the cabinet list. Record each appliance's full dimensions, required clearances, door swing, ventilation, electrical or gas connections and installation instructions. Then match the specified Nerro cabinet width, height, depth and collection to the confirmed opening, panels, fillers and surrounding cabinet run.

Appliance-cabinet decision map

Zone Key appliance information Cabinet review
Refrigerator Full size, doors, ventilation and services Opening, upper cabinet, panels and fillers
Range or cooktop Model, hood and manufacturer clearances Cabinet width, height and adjacent run
Microwave Installation type, opening and ventilation Exact cabinet and access height
Any appliance Current installation document Confirmed plan and qualified-trade review

Build the appliance schedule before the cabinet cart

Create one line for every refrigerator, range, cooktop, hood and microwave. Record the manufacturer, model number, full product dimensions, required opening, door or drawer movement, ventilation, connection locations and a link to the current installation document. Use the same appliance schedule for the cabinet plan, countertop plan and installation review.

Do not treat nominal labels such as 30-inch range or 36-inch refrigerator as finished-opening instructions. Handles, hinges, doors, levelling requirements, wall conditions and manufacturer clearances can change the usable opening. If the appliance model changes, the surrounding cabinet list must be checked again.

Select Painted or Euro before matching appliance cabinets. Keep visible doors, panels, fillers, toe kicks and the surrounding run within that system unless current product information specifically confirms compatibility.

Add a status column to the schedule for “selected,” “ordered” or “substitution pending.” Cabinet dimensions should not be released from a placeholder appliance. When a retailer substitutes a later model, compare the new installation document line by line—even when the advertised width is unchanged. Save the revision date so the cabinet supplier, designer and installer are working from the same appliance information.

Plan the refrigerator opening and upper cabinet together

Start with the refrigerator's complete dimensions and installation requirements. Check body width, height and depth, but also review door thickness, hinge clearance, handles, levelling, ventilation and the space needed to remove shelves or drawers. A refrigerator can fit the closed opening and still fail to open or ventilate as intended.

Compare the confirmed plan with the current Painted Fridge Cabinets or Euro Fridge Cabinets. Current listings include multiple widths, heights and both shallow and deeper cabinet options. Use the exact product dimensions instead of choosing only by appliance width.

Finished side panels may frame an exposed refrigerator opening or complete the visible end of the run. Fillers may provide planned clearance at walls or between components. Their thickness and position must be included in the total run; they are not decorative additions that can be decided after the appliance arrives.

Review the opening both empty and with the refrigerator doors fully open. Nearby walls, tall cabinets, islands and countertop edges can limit door swing or access to interior bins. The manufacturer may also require space above, behind or beside the unit for airflow and service. Use those published requirements when setting the finished panel-to-panel opening.

Coordinate the range, hood and surrounding cabinets

The range or cooktop zone must be reviewed with the selected ventilation equipment. Use the current appliance and hood installation instructions for required openings and clearances. Do not apply a generic distance from another appliance model or from a photograph.

Browse the Painted Stove Cabinets or Euro Stove Cabinets only after the appliance zone is defined. Current Nerro stove-cabinet listings include multiple heights in common appliance-zone widths, but the final product must match the confirmed elevation and manufacturer requirements.

Check adjacent drawer and door movement, handle projection and countertop conditions. Electrical, gas and ventilation work should be coordinated by the appropriate qualified trades. Nerro supplies cabinet products and ordering information; it does not replace appliance or code review.

Match the microwave cabinet to the installation type

First identify whether the selected appliance is approved for the intended cabinet installation. Countertop, built-in, drawer and over-the-range microwaves have different requirements. A cabinet opening that looks suitable does not make an appliance approved for that location.

Use the current Painted Microwave Cabinets or Euro Microwave Cabinets collection specified in the plan. Current Nerro listings include 24-inch-wide cabinet products in several heights. Confirm the exact opening, cabinet depth, access height, door arrangement and ventilation instructions for the selected microwave.

Plan a usable loading height and enough open space for the appliance door and controls. Confirm the electrical location and cord route without creating an unsupported cabinet modification. Follow the appliance manufacturer and qualified installer for ventilation, fastening and service access.

Complete panels, fillers and both cabinet runs

Appliance cabinets belong to the surrounding upper, base or tall-cabinet sequence. Use the upper cabinet guide and base cabinet guide to check the complete elevation and floor plan.

  • Keep the appliance schedule and cabinet list on the same revision.
  • Include every planned filler and finished panel in the opening calculation.
  • Check doors, drawers, handles and traffic paths with appliances open.
  • Verify electrical, gas, water and ventilation locations with qualified trades.
  • Recheck the cabinet run whenever an appliance model changes.
  • Confirm production timing and delivery access before checkout.

Use the components checklist to review finishing parts and the order checklist for the final cart comparison. Current timing is listed on the production and delivery page.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose appliances before ordering cabinets?

Yes. Exact appliance model numbers and current installation documents are needed to confirm openings, clearances and surrounding cabinet products.

Can I plan cabinets using only the advertised appliance width?

No. Review full dimensions, handles, hinges, ventilation, services and the manufacturer's required opening.

Are refrigerator panels included with the appliance cabinet?

Do not assume they are included. Review the exact cabinet product page and add compatible finished panels or fillers listed separately in the confirmed cabinet schedule.

Can any microwave be installed inside a microwave cabinet?

No. The appliance must be approved for the intended installation, opening and ventilation conditions. Follow the exact manufacturer's instructions.

Who confirms appliance clearances and connections?

The appliance manufacturer provides product requirements, while the final plan and qualified installers or trades confirm how those requirements apply to the project and site.

Choose one cabinet system, then match each appliance zone to the confirmed plan.
